Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi says government will appoint 50 additional judges to help reduce growing court backlogs.
Speaking in the National Assembly, Kubayi said the move follows commitments made by President Cyril Ramaphosa during the 2026 State of the Nation Address to speed up the justice system.
“We have agreed with the Minister of Finance that we start with 50 judges additional to the establishment that is currently there so that we can build capacity,” Kubayi said.
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has allocated R687 million to strengthen the judiciary.
Kubayi also confirmed that the report of the National Anti-Corruption Advisory Council is being processed, with recommendations including a permanent anti-corruption body and stronger whistle-blower protection laws.
