Health department officials suspended after court appearance

Pretoria — Aaron Motsoaledi, the Minister of Health, has placed three senior officials from the South African Department of Health on precautionary suspension following their recent court appearance.

The officials include Director-General Dr Sandile Buthelezi, Deputy Director-General for Hospital Services Dr Percy Mahlati, and Chief Financial Officer Phaswa Mamogale. According to department spokesperson Foster Mohale, the suspensions will remain in place until their cases are finalised or their contracts expire, whichever comes first.

The three officials recently appeared in court and were released on bail of R10,000 each, with the matter postponed to 3 June.

Meanwhile, the minister has appointed Prof. Nicolas Crisp, the Deputy Director-General for National Health Insurance, as acting Director-General for three months while the matter proceeds.

Motsoaledi said the decision was taken to allow the legal process to run its course, and all affected officials have been formally notified of their suspensions.
