High Court to decide fate of ANC Eastern Cape conference today

The fate of the African National Congress (ANC) Eastern Cape Provincial Elective Conference, scheduled to begin on Friday, is expected to be decided today as the Eastern Cape High Court prepares to deliver judgment in an urgent application that could halt the gathering at the last minute.

The conference, a key event where the ANC’s provincial leadership is set to be elected — has been thrown into uncertainty after applicants Lwazi Rotya, Sinethemba Mpande, and Nompumelelo Mzothwa approached the court seeking to interdict the meeting.

The applicants argue that unresolved disputes from several branch general meetings and alleged irregularities in internal processes render the conference unlawful. They have accused ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula and the party’s Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) of unlawfully approving the conference despite these outstanding issues.

Judgment was reserved earlier this week after arguments were heard. The applicants maintain that the ANC failed to properly resolve disputes in contested branches and that the conference should be postponed until all internal grievances are addressed.

ANC leaders, including Eastern Cape Chairperson Oscar Mabuyane, have rejected the claims, insisting that due processes were followed and that the conference should proceed as planned. Party officials have emphasised the importance of the elective conference as part of preparations for upcoming national and local elections.
