The Department of Home Affairs has launched a digital partnership with banks that allows South Africans to apply for Smart ID cards directly at selected bank branches.
The system, which went live on Sunday, enables applicants to complete Smart ID applications within five to ten minutes through secure digital systems integrated with Home Affairs.
The first participating banks include Capitec Bank and Standard Bank, while First National Bank is in the final phase of testing.
Initially, the service will allow citizens who still use the green ID book to convert to Smart ID cards and enable existing Smart ID holders to apply for re-issues.
Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber said the initiative aims to improve service delivery by reducing long queues and bringing Home Affairs services closer to communities through bank branches.
