The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) is investigating allegations that Princess Faku, mayor of Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, used a municipal event to campaign for the African National Congress (ANC).
The complaint, lodged by the Democratic Alliance (DA), relates to an event in Tsholomnqa.
At the February 13 event, where school shoes and toiletries were handed over, Faku was photographed wearing full ANC regalia in front of municipal banners and insignia.
The ward has been without a councillor since Ntombekhaya Sabana died in 2025, with a by-election scheduled for 18 March.
The IEC’s lawyers have written to the ANC requesting a detailed response to the allegations as the investigation continues.
