Border Management Authority (BMA) says it is investigating a bus driver after 32 undocumented foreign nationals were found on board a bus travelling from Zimbabwe to Cape Town.
The passengers were discovered on Thursday night during Easter road safety operations when traffic officers stopped the vehicle on the N1 highway near Bloemfontein.
BMA confirmed that investigations are underway. Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato said the bus had initially cleared immigration and weighbridge checks at the port of entry, with all passengers reportedly carrying valid documentation at the time.
“They had all the required cross-border permits, and passengers were properly processed into the country,” Masiapato said.
However, when the bus was intercepted later, authorities found 32 undocumented passengers on board. Officials believe the individuals may have been picked up after the bus had already entered the country.
Masiapato said the driver would be required to explain where the passengers were picked up, adding that he faces charges under Section 59 of the Immigration Act for aiding and abetting.
