The Labour Court of South Africa has dismissed an urgent application by suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi to interdict his disciplinary hearing.
Mkhwanazi, facing allegations of granting privileges to controversial tenderpreneur Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala—including blue lights for his security company vehicles—was suspended while a disciplinary hearing, which began in February 2026, was postponed to late March.
He argued that his terminated employment rendered the proceedings invalid. However, the court ruled on 23 March 2026 that termination does not nullify disciplinary action linked to alleged corruption. No order was issued regarding court costs.
The decision allows Mkhwanazi’s disciplinary hearing to proceed, reinforcing ongoing accountability measures within the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department.
