All learners identified in the bullying video from David Mama Senior Secondary School have been suspended with immediate effect, pending the outcome of a formal investigation. This was announced by the MEC for Education during a visit to the school today, following public outrage over the violent incident that recently circulated on social media.
The MEC confirmed that the investigation will go beyond the Latita incident, signaling a broader probe into the school’s environment and any systemic issues. The inquiry is expected to be completed within 14 days, and the findings will be shared with all affected parties.
Support measures for the victim are already underway, with the department arranging emotional and medical care after the learner reported experiencing head pain.
In a further development, the bus driver involved in the incident has been suspended by the Department of Transport.
The Department reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on bullying, guided by the BELA Act. The MEC also referenced a national school safety protocol signed with SAPS, which enables joint operations, including random safety checks in schools flagged for violence and drug-related concerns.
“We are committed to ensuring that every child learns in a safe and supportive environment,” said the MEC. “What happened here is unacceptable, and decisive action is being taken.”
