Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC expresses sadness after five killed in N1 crash

Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC Violet Mathye has expressed deep sadness following a tragic accident on the N1-25 near Boekenhout in the Waterberg District, which claimed the lives of five people on Wednesday morning.

The crash, which occurred at approximately 07:45, involved three vehicles: a Renault light motor vehicle, a Ford light delivery vehicle, and a Toyota light delivery vehicle. Preliminary reports indicate that the Renault allegedly made a U-turn on the freeway, leading to a head-on collision with the other vehicles.

“The loss of lives in this tragic accident is deeply saddening. Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who have passed away,” said MEC Mathye.

The deceased include two male drivers and three passengers from one of the vehicles. Two other passengers sustained serious injuries and were transported to FH Odendaal Hospital for treatment.

The department noted that reckless driving, possibly involving a drunk driver, is suspected to have caused the accident.

MEC Mathye called on all road users to prioritise safety, wishing the injured a speedy recovery and urging motorists to take responsibility for their actions to prevent further tragedies on Limpopo’s roads.
