Julius Malema and his wife, Mantwa Matlala, have threatened legal action against controversial blogger Musa Khawula over what they describe as false and defamatory claims about their marriage.
The dispute follows social media posts by Khawula alleging infidelity and claiming that Matlala had filed for divorce. The claims quickly gained traction online, sparking widespread discussion and speculation.
In response, the Malemas’ legal representatives have issued a letter of demand to Khawula, calling for an immediate retraction of the statements and a public apology. The letter reportedly warns that failure to comply could result in a R1 million defamation lawsuit.
According to the couple’s lawyers, the allegations are baseless and have subjected the family to national ridicule. They argue that the claims have caused emotional distress to their children and damaged the couple’s personal, political and professional reputations.
Should Khawula fail to retract the statements, the Malemas intend to approach the High Court for an interdict and seek damages. The letter further indicates that they may report the matter to the South African Police Service and pursue criminal charges of crimen injuria.
The matter adds to growing scrutiny around social media commentary and the legal limits of online speech, particularly when it concerns public figures.
