Maluti High School opens 2026 academic year on a high note despite dip in Matric results
The 2026 academic year at Maluti High School began on a cheerful and positive note on Wednesday, with learners arriving in high spirits and ready to begin the new school year.
Maluti High School has once again cemented its reputation as one of the leading schools in the Alfred Nzo West District after producing the district’s top achiever, Kanetsio Matubatuba. Kanetsio achieved an outstanding seven distinctions, placing him among the top-performing learners in the Eastern Cape Province. On Tuesday, he travelled to East London to receive his award from Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane and MEC for Education, Fundile Gade.
In 2025, the school presented 230 matric learners for the National Senior Certificate examinations, with 191 learners passing. The results included an impressive 90 distinctions, 106 Bachelor passes, 56 Diploma passes, and 29 Higher Certificate passes.
Despite these achievements, Maluti High School principal, Lulamile Masoka, expressed disappointment with the overall results. Speaking to The Informer, Masoka said the school did not meet its set target.
“I am not happy with the results because our pass percentage dropped compared to last year. In 2024, we achieved 89.6%, but in 2025 we dropped to 83%. Our target was 95%, and we did not reach it,” he said.
Masoka attributed the decline to several challenges faced during the year, with learner discipline being one of the major concerns.
“Some learners would stay at home during examination time. I was forced to go out and look for them and bring them to the examination room,” he explained.
However, the principal remains optimistic about the future. He said the strong learner turnout on the opening day of school gives him confidence that the school can achieve a 100% pass rate in 2026.
“We have not thrown in the towel. Achieving 100% is possible, especially judging by today’s attendance. We opened with unusually big numbers, and learners were prepared and on time for classes,” Masoka said.
He credited the school’s success to a dedicated and committed team of teachers who work tirelessly from Monday to Sunday to support learners.
Masoka joined Maluti High School in 2024 from Metshaeling J.S.S. At the time, the school’s pass rate stood at 85%. Under his leadership, it improved to 89.6% in 2024 before dropping slightly in 2025.
As The Informer, we commend Principal Masoka and his entire team for their continued commitment and determination. Big up to Tata Masoka ne team yakho, and we wish Maluti High School every success in the 2026 academic year.
