Maluti Police Captain killed in hit-and-run outside station

An Eastern Cape senior police officer was killed and a pedestrian injured in a hit-and-run incident near the Maluti Police Station in Matatiele on Thursday night.

According to police, 54-year-old Captain Moloali Mangoadi, who served in the Detective Services at Maluti Police Station, was declared dead at the scene. He is believed to have been on his way to the station for standby duty, as he lived nearby.

The pair were allegedly struck by a white Toyota Caldina. The female driver of the vehicle reportedly fled the scene and remains at large.

The second victim, a pedestrian, sustained injuries and was transported to hospital for medical care.

Police have opened a case of culpable homicide and confirm that the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

In a separate incident  Cedarville Police have arrested a 35-year-old man in connection with the brutal murder of a 42-year-old Cedarville man on Wednesday evening, 2 July 2025. The suspect, who was apprehended on Thursday, 3 July, faces charges of murder, house robbery, and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

According to the police report, around 20:30 on Wednesday, the suspect, armed with both a firearm and a knife, stormed into a house in Khorong Koali Park, Cedarville. The man reportedly held the occupants at gunpoint, robbing them of their cellphones before stabbing one of the victims. The victim was declared dead at the scene after the suspect fled.
