A 28-year-old woman appeared before the Maluti Magistrate’s Court in Matatiele on Monday in connection with the death of a senior police officer, Captain Moloali Mangoadi.
The accused, Mtseping Mbali Rashuze from Maluti Location, is alleged to have fatally struck the 54-year-old officer with a vehicle near the Maluti Police Station. According to police reports, Captain Mangoadi was on his way to work while on standby duty when the incident occurred.
Rashuze was reportedly driving a white Toyota Caldina, which she is believed to have taken without the owner’s consent. She allegedly hit Captain Mangoadi along with another pedestrian, who sustained injuries and is currently recovering in hospital.
Captain Mangoadi was declared dead at the scene.
Following the incident, Rashuze fled and remained at large for two days. She was eventually handed over to the police by her mother on Sunday.
She has been formally charged with culpable homicide. However, authorities have indicated that the charges may be upgraded to murder and attempted murder, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
Rashuze has been remanded in custody until 14 July for profiling and further investigative procedures.
