A 35-year-old man has been arrested after he was found in possession of 14 prepaid water meters in Makhanda.
Police said members of the Makhanda SAPS Crime Prevention Unit and Highway Patrol Unit were conducting targeted patrols in Froude Street at about 10:00 on Tuesday, 24 February 2026, when they spotted a man carrying a heavy bag.
Officers approached the suspect and requested to search the bag, where they discovered damaged prepaid water meters.
Preliminary investigations revealed that at least one of the meters had been stolen from a nearby residence, which was left flooded due to streaming water.
The suspect has been charged with damage to essential infrastructure and possession of suspected stolen property. He is expected to appear in the Makhanda Magistrate’s Court soon.
