A 34-year-old man has been arrested in Bhukuqweni locality, KwaNyathi A/A, during a search-and-seizure operation conducted by Tactical Response Teams (TRT) in the Alfred Nzo and Joe Gqabi districts.
The operation, carried out on 26 and 27 February 2026, led to the recovery of an R4 assault rifle with an erased serial number and two magazines loaded with 66 live rounds of ammunition. Police also seized a 9mm Norinco pistol with eight live rounds. A circulation check revealed that the pistol was linked to a Marikana theft case registered in February 2023.
The suspect was unable to provide a valid firearm licence and was arrested on the scene. He is expected to appear before the Lusikisiki Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 2 March 2026, on charges of unlawful possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
Major General Norman Modishana praised the members involved in the operation.
“We will continue, as police, to fight the proliferation of unlicensed and prohibited firearms in the district, as they are often used to terrorise our communities during the commission of serious and violent crimes,” he said.
