Siyabulela Tshemese (45) has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Makhanda High Court for the murder of his 34-year-old girlfriend, Amanda Kweyama.
The Joe Gqabi District Commissioner, Major General Lindelwa Vellem, praised Detective Constable Brian Koitsiwe and Detective Warrant Officer Mboniswa Methuso of the Ugie detectives for their dedication and professionalism in securing the conviction.
The court heard that on 27 October 2024, Tshemese and Kweyama were drinking at a local tavern. After leaving the tavern, the accused allegedly left Kweyama by the roadside during heavy rain and later returned with a stick, assaulting her until he left her again on the roadside. She was found dead the following morning.
Tshemese was arrested, opposed bail at the Ugie Magistrate Court, and was remanded in custody until his transfer to Makhanda High Court, where he received the life sentence on 20 February 2026.
Maj Gen Vellem said the sentence sends a strong message that gender-based violence will not be tolerated. “As SAPS, we remain resolute in the fight against gender-based violence and will continue to ensure perpetrators are brought to justice,” she said.
