The Phuthaditjhaba Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, working together with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), has secured the conviction and sentencing of a 37-year-old man for the rape of his 24-year-old sister.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that the accused was sentenced to 18 years’ direct imprisonment by the Phuthaditjhaba Regional Court on Thursday, 26 February 2026, following a protracted trial that spanned seven years.
Attack after victim returned home
According to police, the incident occurred on Sunday, 31 March 2019, in Thibella Village. The 24-year-old victim had returned home from a local tavern, locked her door and went to bed.
During the night, while she was asleep, she felt someone touching her and realised it was her brother. Out of fear, she was unable to scream. The accused proceeded to undress and rape her multiple times before fleeing the scene through a broken door.
The victim immediately reported the matter to police, leading to the suspect’s arrest and subsequent charge of rape.
Justice after lengthy trial
After years of court proceedings, the Phuthaditjhaba Regional Court found the accused guilty and imposed an 18-year prison sentence.
SAPS has welcomed the sentence, saying it sends a strong message that sexual offences, particularly those committed against vulnerable victims, will not be tolerated.
Police further commended the investigating officer and the prosecution team for their dedication in ensuring justice was served.
