The Eastern Cape Division of the High Court has sentenced Litha Zanozuko Nkalambela (44) to 22 years’ direct imprisonment for the brutal murder of his wife, Nthabiseng Nkalambela (38).
The killing occurred on 27 August 2020 at the couple’s home in Cathcart Street, Maletswai, where Nkalambela violently assaulted his wife with a tonfa, causing severe head injuries. Medical evidence showed she died approximately six hours after the attack.
Arrested on the day of the assault, Nkalambela was later found guilty on 5 December 2025 after multiple court appearances and remained in custody until his sentencing on 25 March 2026. The court emphasized the seriousness of the crime and the accused’s failure to take responsibility, highlighting the need for stricter sentencing in gender-based violence cases.
Colonel Zingiza Manqoyi, acting Joe Gqabi District Commissioner, praised the investigating team, saying the conviction provides justice for the victim and sends a strong message that perpetrators of femicide will face the full force of the law.
