A 44-year-old man has been sentenced to two life terms of imprisonment by the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court for the repeated rape of his 14-year-old niece in Kaalfontein Extension 2.
The court heard that the abuse occurred on multiple occasions, with the accused taking advantage of the child’s vulnerability and his position of trust within the family. His identity has been withheld to protect the victim from secondary victimisation.
One of the incidents took place in September 2021 during the victim’s mother’s birthday celebration. Family and friends had gathered for the occasion, and the victim was left alone with the accused. It was during this time that he sexually assaulted her.
Evidence presented in court revealed that the assaults were ongoing, forming a pattern of abuse over a period of time. The victim later disclosed the incidents, prompting an investigation that led to the arrest and prosecution of the accused.
The magistrate described the crimes as “extremely serious,” noting the lasting trauma inflicted on the young victim and the betrayal of familial trust.
The National Prosecuting Authority praised the sentence, calling it a strong warning against sexual abuse of minors. Community groups also urged families to remain vigilant and ensure children feel safe to report abuse.
The convicted man will serve his sentence in prison, reflecting the severity of his crimes.
