Higher Education Minister Buti Manamela has ordered a forensic probe into the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) after a damning audit revealed possible fraud and serious governance failures.
NSFAS has been instructed to work with the Special Investigating Unit to investigate irregularities and take legal action where necessary.
The Auditor-General of South Africa issued a disclaimer of opinion, flagging issues including funding paid to deceased beneficiaries, ineligible students, and those receiving double benefits.
Manamela also raised concerns over unsafe student accommodation, ordering an urgent audit of providers and warning that non-compliant landlords will be removed.
He assured nearly 800,000 students that legitimate funding will not be affected as efforts to restore accountability continue.
