Matatiele Mayor launches pothole repair drive ahead of festive season rush

Matatiele Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr Patrick Stuurman, has officially launched a major pothole repair campaign aimed at improving the condition of internal streets across the town ahead of the busy December period.

The launch took place this week, with the Mayor joining a municipal team on-site to oversee and participate in the repairs. He was accompanied by Ward 19 Councillor Sheron Booth, Cllr Thembeka Dyantyi, Cllr Mzwamandla Nyembezi, Municipal Manager Lizo Matiwane, and senior managers from the Infrastructure Department.

The team worked along several internal routes, filling potholes that have accumulated due to heavy rainfall, regular traffic flow, and general road wear. Mayor Stuurman said the campaign forms part of the municipality’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure development both in town and in surrounding villages.

We are serious about improving our infrastructure. Fixing potholes is not just about beautifying our streets — it’s about ensuring road safety for all road users,” he said. “As we prepare for the December holidays, we expect a large convoy of vehicles coming into Matatiele. We want residents, visitors, and local businesses to move around safely and efficiently.

According to the municipality, the pothole repair programme is set to run intensively over the coming days and is expected to be completed by 10 December 2025. The project targets key internal roads, with a particular focus on the central business district (CBD), where traffic volumes are highest.

Infrastructure officials say the campaign is part of a broader maintenance plan that will continue into the new year to ensure roads remain in good condition and that service delivery backlogs are addressed more consistently.

Residents have welcomed the initiative, noting that smoother roads will improve driving experience, reduce vehicle damage, and support economic activity during the festive season.

Mayor Stuurman added that the municipality will continue monitoring the condition of all local roads and respond promptly to new pothole reports as part of its commitment to a safer, cleaner and more accessible Matatiele.
