The MEC for Social Development in the Eastern Cape, Bukiwe Mfanta, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to supporting survivors of gender-based violence following a deeply moving visit to 20-year-old Zandiswa Ntshamba at the School for the Blind in Pretoria.
Zandiswa, originally from Cabazana village in Maxesibeni, survived a brutal sexual assault that left her with severe injuries, including the loss of her eyesight. Left for dead after the attack, her story is one of both unimaginable trauma and extraordinary resilience.
During the visit, Zandiswa opened up about her painful journey and the challenges she continues to face. Despite everything she has endured, she is now focused on rebuilding her life. She is currently acquiring new skills at the institution, showing remarkable determination to regain her independence and shape a better future.
Mfanta expressed deep admiration for Zandiswa’s courage, emphasizing that her strength serves as an inspiration to many. She assured her of the department’s full support as she embarks on this new chapter. In response, Zandiswa expressed gratitude for the visit and the continued support she has received, noting that it gives her the strength to keep moving forward.
The Department of Social Development in the Eastern Cape reiterated its commitment to providing comprehensive support to survivors of gender-based violence. This includes access to counseling, vocational training, and other resources aimed at promoting healing and empowerment.
Mfanta stressed that addressing gender-based violence requires a collective effort from all sectors of society, not just government. She called on communities to play an active role in creating safer environments for women and children, where survivors feel protected and supported to speak out.
The visit served as a powerful reminder of the urgent need to intensify efforts in combating gender-based violence. Zandiswa’s story highlights both the devastating impact of such crimes and the importance of sustained advocacy and intervention.
Mfanta concluded by reaffirming her commitment to championing the rights and well-being of survivors, ensuring that no victim walks their journey alone. She emphasized that through unity and decisive action, society can work towards a future free from fear and violence.
