Eastern Cape Education MEC Fundile Gade has strongly condemned the alleged brutal killing of Zovuyo Mbana, expressing shock that one of the suspects is reportedly a departmental employee, who is both a teacher and a priest.
The MEC’s remarks come after a 54-year-old alleged school principal, who is believed to have paid killers R11,000, was among four suspects arrested in connection with the murder. The victim, a 30-year-old woman from KuGompo City, was allegedly kidnapped, strangled, and her body set alight.
Gade described the incident as a serious case of gender-based violence and said the department is treating the allegations with urgency. He confirmed that steps are being taken to initiate labour relations processes, while also considering the most appropriate legal action.
“As the department, we will continue to monitor court proceedings, particularly regarding bail. If bail is denied, we will stop the salary and immediately begin processes to terminate the employment contract,” said Gade.
The MEC extended his heartfelt condolences to Mbana’s family and friends, adding that the department will continue to closely monitor developments in court
