Jumba Senior Secondary School outside Mthatha unveiled a memorial stone on Wednesday for 10 pupils who died when a school minibus was swept away by floodwaters on June 10, 2025. Three learners survived by clinging to trees, while the disaster claimed 103 lives across the district, including 32 schoolchildren.
Eastern Cape Education representative Fundile Gade pledged ongoing psycho-social support for families, noting that “emotional scars are not addressed overnight.”
Gift of the Givers founder Imtiaz Sooliman described the floods as a mission of “unimaginable destruction,” adding that their support helps restore dignity, hope, and education for affected learners.
The memorial and rebuilt classrooms stand as a tribute to the lost pupils and a symbol of resilience for the community.
