Men aged 64 and 74 arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms

Two elderly men, aged 67 and 74, have been arrested by the OR Tambo Stock Theft Prevention Task Team for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition at Gaduka locality,Mthatha.

It is reported that task team received a tip off and followed the lead “The arrests were effected on Friday, 30 January 2026, at approximately 01:00, following information received by the police. Members of the task team conducted searches at the suspects’ residences.

“During a search at the homestead of the 74-year-old suspect, police recovered a CZ 7.65 (9mm) pistol with an intact serial number, as well as live rounds of ammunition, hidden in his bedroom. The suspect failed to produce a licence to lawfully possess the firearm and ammunition and was arrested on the spot.
Further investigation revealed that the firearm was previously due for destruction in 2018.” said Police Caption Welile Matyholo.

In another incident, a 67-year-old suspect was found in possession of a 9mm Norinco pistol with an erased serial number, along with live rounds of ammunition.

The suspects are expected to appear before the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court soon. They have been charged with unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.
