Minister Gwarube to Announce 2025 Matric Results as IEB Records 98.3% Pass Rate

Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube is expected to announce the national 2025 Matric results later this evening. The announcement will include the overall pass rate, top-performing learners and provincial performance, and will be delivered alongside Deputy Minister Reginah Mhaule.

The Free State is hoping to maintain its position as the top-performing province for a seventh consecutive year, while other provinces are optimistic about unseating it. Full individual results will be released to 2025 Matric candidates on Tuesday. However, results for learners implicated in alleged examination irregularities during the 2025 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams will be withheld pending investigations.

Meanwhile, the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) has already announced an overall pass rate of 98.3%. Of these candidates, 89.12% qualified for degree studies, reflecting a slight decline compared to 2024.

A total of 17,000 candidates wrote the IEB Matric examinations in 2025. Gauteng recorded the highest participation, with 114 schools taking part, while the Northern Cape had the lowest participation, with only three schools.

In addition, 161 learners were recognised for achieving results in the top 5% across six subjects. The closing date for applications for remarking is 30 January, with final results expected to be released on 4 March, subject to approval by Umalusi.
