Councillor Sonwabile Mngenela, who was appointed by the African National Congress as Mayor of the Matatiele Local Municipality, has formally relinquished his position.
Reports indicate that Councillor Mngenela submitted his resignation letter to the Speaker on Wednesday. Alfred Nzo Regional Task Team coordinator Polelo Mohale confirmed the resignation.
“I have officially received reports that Cllr Mngenela has resigned”, Mohale said He said a Special council meeting is convened for Friday the 25th to elect an acting Mayor to hold the position till the results of Mngenela’s court case.
Mohale did not want to divulge the name of the person who might take over the reigns but reliable sources said Cllr Patrick Stuurman might be elected as a new Mayor on Friday.
