Mother and two children killed in tragic N6 crash near Stutterheim

The Eastern Cape Department of Transport (EC DoT) has expressed deep sorrow following a tragic road crash that claimed the lives of a mother and her two children on the N6 road outside Stutterheim towards East London.

Eastern Cape Transport Spokesperson, Unathi Binqose in a statement said the collision, which occurred earlier this morning, involved a Sedan and a fully loaded mini bus. He said, preliminary reports indicate that the mother, believed to be in her 40s, was travelling with her two children, aged five and 15, when the vehicles collided. All three occupants of the sedan died at the scene.

“At least 20 passengers travelling in the mini bus sustained injuries and were transported to Stutterheim Hospital for medical treatment. The bus was reportedly ferrying workers home from a well-known local chicken meat processing company at the time of the accident”..

“It is understood that the deceased and several of the injured are residents of Stutterheim, underscoring the devastating impact of the crash on the local community, where many may know one another”, said Binqose.

Meanwhile MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Xolile Nqatha, has extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the broader Stutterheim community.

“We are deeply disturbed by this tragic loss of life, particularly that of young children. On behalf of the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, I extend my sincere condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of those who have lost their lives. Our thoughts are also with the injured, and we wish them a speedy and full recovery. This tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the devastating impact of road crashes on our communities,” said MEC Nqatha.

Law enforcement and emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, and an investigation into the cause of the crash is currently underway.

The EC DoT has once again urged all road users to exercise extreme caution, adhere to traffic laws, and remain vigilant at all times, particularly on busy routes such as the N6.
