Mpumalanga PPE tender worth over R14 million declared unlawful; Mokonyane and Mgudlwa ordered to repay profits

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has welcomed judgments by the Special Tribunal setting aside unlawful contracts awarded by the Mpumalanga Department of Health during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The tribunal reviewed contracts for 60,000 surgical masks valued at R1,080,000 and 150,000 protective medical jumpsuits worth R13,297,500. Both contracts were declared constitutionally invalid, unlawful, and void.

Katlego Mokonyane, daughter and business partner of ANC Secretary Nomvula Mokonyane, and Bonelela Mgudlwa, husband of radio personality Anele Mdoda, have been ordered by the Special Tribunal to repay over R14 million from a tender awarded to their company, Tark Group, by the Mpumalanga Department of Health.

The SIU said the tribunal’s orders highlight the need for accountability and transparency in public procurement, especially during emergencies, and demonstrate that public office and business dealings are subject to scrutiny regardless of personal connections.
