Mugabe’s son back in court as plea deal collapses in attempted murder case

The son of late Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe appeared in the Alexandra Magistrates Court on Tuesday, facing charges of attempted murder following a shooting incident earlier this year.

The 28-year-old Bellarmine Mugabe appeared alongside co-accused Tobias Matonhodze in connection with the alleged shooting of a former employee at the Mugabe family home in Hyde Park in mid-February.

Prosecutors told the court that plea negotiations between the state and the defence had stalled, despite being close to finalisation. The court heard that no agreement had been reached, with the state reportedly dissatisfied with the terms proposed by the defence.

As a result, the matter was postponed to 17 April for further investigations. The presiding magistrate warned that no further delays would be tolerated.
