Municipal raids expose widespread sale of expired goods in Matatiele

The Alfred Nzo District Municipality, in collaboration with Matatiele Local Municipality, conducted a large-scale inspection of shops across Matatiele on Monday as part of its intensified Food Safety Campaign. The operation aimed to ensure that all products sold to consumers meet health and safety standards, with particular attention given to expiry dates and proper product labelling.

During the blitz, Cllr. Rejoice Nkomo-Khwela highlighted the ongoing problem of expired and non-compliant goods being sold in communities, a trend that mirrors worrying reports from across the country.

“Monday’s inspections in Matatiele uncovered deeply concerning practices,” said Cllr. Nkomo-Khwela. “We found numerous expired items, products missing best-before or expiry information, and cases where expiry details had been intentionally removed. Due to these violations, several shops were immediately closed. It is alarming that our communities are exposed to such risks, and even more troubling that some residents continue buying from these shops despite the dangers.”

The municipality condemned the sale of unsafe and expired goods, urging all traders to fully comply with national health regulations and municipal by-laws.

Both municipalities also called on consumers to exercise caution by checking product labels carefully, avoiding any expired or suspicious goods, and reporting non-compliant shops to authorities.

The campaign forms part of a broader effort to safeguard public health, with the municipalities reaffirming their commitment to ensuring safe trading conditions and protecting the wellbeing of all residents
