Former South African Minister of International Relations and current Nelson Mandela Foundation chair Naledi Pandor says she has been left puzzled after the United States unexpectedly cancelled her visa.
Pandor confirmed that she received an email from the US Consulate earlier this week informing her that her visa had been revoked. The notice arrived shortly after she returned from a trip to the United States.
Since retiring from active politics last year, Pandor has held a multiple-entry visitor’s visa that allowed her to travel to the US for short visits. Most recently, in July, she delivered a keynote address at the United Nations in New York in honour of Nelson Mandela International Day, where she spoke about the global need for fairness and justice.
Speaking on the decision, Pandor expressed confusion and frustration:
“I don’t understand why my visa has been revoked. No explanation was provided, and under the section referenced in the email, the US is not required to give any reason,” she said.
The former minister says she has received no further clarification from US authorities.
