NCC probes leading sanitary pad brands over chemical safety concerns

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has launched an investigation into several major sanitary pad and panty liner suppliers operating in South Africa following findings that flagged potentially harmful chemicals in some products.

The probe targets a number of well-known brands and manufacturers, including Kimberly-Clark of SA (Kotex), Procter & Gamble (Always), Anna Organi, The Lion Match Company, Here We Flo (Flo), Johnson & Johnson (Stayfree), Premier Group, Essity Hygiene and Health AB (Libresse South Africa), and My Time.

According to the NCC, the investigation follows a recent study that identified the possible presence of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in certain menstrual hygiene products. These chemicals are known to interfere with the body’s hormonal system and may pose long-term health risks.

The Commission said the inquiry is aimed at determining whether the implicated companies are compliant with the Consumer Protection Act (CPA), which requires suppliers to ensure that goods placed on the market are safe and of good quality.

As part of the process, the affected companies have been instructed to conduct further independent testing or submit recent laboratory reports confirming whether their products contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals.

The NCC said it would assess the information received and determine the appropriate regulatory steps, which could include enforcement action if non-compliance with consumer safety standards is established.
