The Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality has confirmed that full restoration of electricity supply to all affected areas has been revised to Thursday.
According to a statement released by the municipality, the independent technical assessments by ESKOM have confirmed that the affected towers failed due extreme weather conditions, including wind speeds of up to 150 km/h and deliberate vandalism on the two pylons on 22 January 2026.
The municipality said it is implementing permanent infrastructure upgrades, including the replacement of vulnerable pylons with vandal-resistant steel monopole structures as part of a longer-term hardening programme.
The Executive Mayor, Councillor Babalwa Lobishe, reaffirmed the Municipality’s accountability, “We recognise the severe impact these outages have had on residents and businesses. Our teams are working around the clock to restore supply safely and permanently. We will not compromise on safety or quality in pursuit of speed.”
