30% DECREASE IN ROAD FATALITIES FOR THE EC
Eastern Cape Province has achieved a 30% decline in road fatalities this festive. The national stats were released by Minister Fikile Mbalula earlier today, as the country hits the halfway mark of the Festive Season Arrive Alive campaigns.
The EC recorded a decline of just over 30 percent in fatalities, down to 88 this December from 127 fatalities for the same period last year. The province has also managed to record a 34 percent decrease in fatal crashes down from 108 last December to 71 this year.
KwaZulu Natal was the next fair performer with a 24,3 percent decrease in fatalities, down from 173 fatalities in the same period to 131 this December. MEC, Weziwe Tikana-Gxotiwe has challenged people of the Eastern Cape to build on the positives reflected on the statistics and make the province’s roads even safer.
The release of the statistics come as the province and the country gear up for what promises to be the busiest week on the roads so far this festive season, as travelers make their final dash home to be with their families on Christmas Day.
