82-year-old woman arrested for defrauding RAF

An 82-year-old woman is expected to return to court on 29 January 2024 for defrauding the Road Accident Fund of R255 000.

According to Hawks Spokesperson Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana, Pensioner Mavis Ganyaza appeared before the Mthatha Specialised Commercial Crimes court on Wednesday where she was released on a warning.

“On the 22nd of January 2020, a family member of Ganyaza was involved in a minibus accident, sustaining serious injuries.

“The victim approached attorneys in Mthatha to lodge a claim with RAF on her behalf.

“In December 2021, she made inquiries about her claim and was informed by her lawyers that the money was already paid into a bank account.

“The victim reported the matter to the Hawks as she did not know the account. The investigation then revealed that the compensation of R255 000 was deposited into Ganyaza’s account. The investigation further exposed that Ganyaza submitted documents to the attorneys pretending to be the rightful claimant.”
