85 NABBED FOR DRUNK DRIVING IN MTHATHA OVER THE “HERITAGE DAY” LONG WEEKEND
The Department of Transport in the Eastern Cape has reported that about 85 drunken drivers were arrested during an integrated Drunken Driving Operation between the Provincial Traffic Task Team and National Traffic Police (NTP) in O.R.Tambo District in Mthatha. The operations were a joint effort from the National Traffic Police, Provincial Traffic and KSD Traffic.
The number of Drunken Drivers arrested on the three-day operation was 85. The youngest arrested offender, 25 years old and the eldest, a 60 years old. In that 85, a total of 8 drunk drivers were females and 77 were males.
One of the drunk drivers arrested was a bus driver. One person was arrested for hindering and interfering with a Traffic Officer in the execution of his/his duties – a passenger obstructing Traffic Officers from arresting a driver.
Transport MEC, Weziwe Tikana-Gxotiwe has hailed the joint operation by law enforcement officers from the three different spheres of government as a massive success that has potentially saved dozens of lives from any possible crashes over the long weekend. “Their joint effort in keeping our roads safe is something we particularly commend. Their actions and commitment to the task at hand has certainly saved dozens of innocent lives from harm including that of offenders from any self-inflicted harm. We’re proud of them,” said Tikana.
“This exercise is one of the build-up operations to the October Transport Month operations as we gear up for the Festive Season. This success comes hot on the heels of another huge success last weekend when *89* Drunken Drivers were arrested in the same area,” concluded Tikana
