Baby alleged to have had progeria passes away

Two-month-old baby Anothando Mtshobi who was alleged to have had a rare condition named Progeria passed away on Thursday shortly after being admitted to the hospital. This was confirmed by Petros Majola of the Eastern Cape C community Development Project. The two-month-old baby recently made headlines on media platforms because of her condition alleged to be Progeria. Progeria is a progressive genetic disorder, where symptoms of ageing manifest at an early age. This results in a slow-growth hair loss and a high-pitched voice.

The two-month-old baby was recently admitted to the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital to be monitored by a team that involves doctors, nurses, social workers, psychologists and rehabilitative services through physiotherapists, occupational health therapists and dietitians.

Whilst under supervision in the hospital, one of the doctors, Dr Nonkqubela Mkizwana alleged that the little girl’s condition might have been caused by severe malnutrition. According to Dr Mkizwana, malnutrition is caused by not breastfeeding or eating properly.

Dr Mkizwana alleged that because baby Anothando was born in a poverty-stricken family, she suffered from severe malnutrition.
