Bester and his lover Dr Magudumana expected to return in court
On Wednesday, convicted rapist Thabo Bester will be transported from the Kgosi Mampuru Prison in Pretoria to Bloemfontein Magistrate Court, where he will appear with 11 of his co-accused, including G4S guards and his lover and alleged accomplice, Doctor Nandipha Magudumana.
Bester and 11 others are facing a string of charges including fraud and corruption, aiding and abetting a prisoner to escape and tampering with a corpse.
Bester escaped from the Mangaung Correctional Centre on May 3 2022, the department confirmed, after it was initially believed he had committed suicide by setting himself alight in his cell.
Security company G4S insisted Bester died in the fire, but confirmed it had dismissed three employees for their conduct on the day.
In her previous court appearance, Magudumana claimed he forced her to skip the country, effectively kidnapping her.
Magudumana bid for bail was denied by Magistrate Estelle de Lange who ruled that she was a flight risk.
