A learner from one of the schools in the Eastern Cape has lost his life after suffering from burn wounds while six others are in hospital. This happened after the learners schooling in Libode attempted to kill a snake in the school premises by pouring sanitiser on the grass and setting it alight.

Eastern Cape Education Department spokesperson, Mali Mtima, said three learners sustained serious burn wounds when the fire spread to a shed housing two 25 litres containers of sanitiser which apparently burst. He said the three seriously injured learners were rushed to the St Barnabas Hospital in Libode, where one child died.

Four other learners are receiving treatment in the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha.

The investigation into Tuesday’s incident at the Nzuluka Senior Primary School in Libode is continuing.
