Eastern Cape Transport Department bolsters road maintenance with addition of 11 new Graders
In a significant move to enhance road infrastructure within the Eastern Cape, the provincial Transport Department has fortified its maintenance capacity with the acquisition of 11 new road construction and maintenance graders. These machines, produced by the well-known manufacturer Komatsu, were handed over to Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha as part of a strategic effort to address the deteriorating condition of rural roads, exacerbated by recent flood damage.
The delivery of the graders is the first installment of a larger commitment made by the province to secure a 36-item ‘yellow fleet’ designed to revive and sustain roadways throughout the region. MEC Nqatha emphasized the importance of rapid action, calling for the immediate licensing and training for grader operators, to accelerate the effort of restoring affected communities.
The campaign to refurbish the road network is in line with Premier Oscar Mabuyane’s promise and MEC Nqatha’s policy address, focusing on robust service delivery models to tackle the pressing issues faced by the province’s infrastructure. The benefits of this intervention are timely as they promise to substantially improve access to critical social services for the province’s residents.
The 11 new graders are set to be dispersed among districts in dire need, prioritizing locations with the worst damage. The remainder of the fleet is expected to be delivered to the department in the upcoming weeks, further contributing to the ongoing efforts to rehabilitate the Eastern Cape’s roads.
