Eastern Cape woman shoots herself while under interrogation

The murder of a man in Cradock at the weekend took a dramatic turn when a woman being questioned by police shot herself in the head.

She remains in critical condition in hospital.

Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the drama began on Saturday night when 36-year-old Sivenathi Ralarala was shot dead outside his Lingelihle home.

Colonel Naidu says that while still at the crime scene, police received information that a silver Hyundai believed to have been involved in the incident had been spotted on the R61 by members of the Mthatha Tactical Response Team. They had stopped the vehicle near Tabase village.

“A man, who was the driver, and a female passenger, were inside the car,” said Colonel Naidu. “While the woman was being questioned, she took out a  pistol and shot herself in the head.”

She said the woman was rushed to a hospital in Mthatha while the driver, approximately 40 years old, was detained for further questioning in relation to the Cradock murder.

“A 9mm pistol, magazine, and six rounds of ammunition were seized. The firearm will be sent to ballistics for analysis. The silver Hyundai was also seized for investigation,” said Colonel Naidu.

A case of murder is under investigation.
