EC EDUCATION MEC WELCOMES THE ARREST OF DEPARTMENTAL OFFICIALS BY THE HAWKS
The Eastern Cape Department of Education MEC, Fundile Gade has welcomed the arrest of a high ranking official implicated in the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) scandal in the department.
“The department welcomes this as it forms part of the PPE proclamation by President Cyril Ramaphosa relating to the PPE scandal. We call upon all officials and citizens of this country to do the right thing and co-operate with all the law enforcement agencies deployed by the state to investigate the matter,” said MEC
This comes after the Hawks on Thursday arrested the official in his home in Zwelitsha, Qonce for allegedly defrauding the office of more than R4 million.
According to Hawks spokesperson, Yolisa Mgolodela there was a tender that was awarded to a company that allegedly belongs to the sister of the director of supply chain management in the Eastern Cape Department of Education.
“The agreement was whenever there was money generated from that tender payments, the sister would be [getting] 10% of that money. The Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) tender was around R2 million. There were other tenders that were awarded erroneously to that same company also amounting to more than R2 million. So we are talking about an amount of more than R4 million,” concluded Mgolodela.
The arrest of the senior official comes after one of his partners reported the crime because he did not receive the amount that was initially agreed on.
