EC health department procures cancer treatment machine worth R60 million
The Eastern Cape department of health says it has procured a highly sophisticated cancer treatment equipment called Linac at a cost of R60 million.
According to the department, this will benefit more than 1000 cancer patients who are receiving treatment from Livingstone Hospital.
“The installation of this specialised machine complements other treatment modalities like surgery and chemotherapy, which are already well established at the hospital, “said department spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo.
According to the department, a state-of-the-art Oncology unit is also being built at the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha.
“The multi- million rand cancer ward will serve patients from the entire eastern side of the province.
Once completed, it will bring to an end the long drive being experienced by cancer patients who sometimes have to be seen by specialists at Frere Hospital’s Oncology unit in East London and Livingstone in Gqeberha,” said Kupelo.
A specialist has already been appointed to establish an ecology clinic at the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital pending the completion of the fully fledged ward that would be fitted with morden equipment.
