Former Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula gunning for National Assembly Speaker position
The former Defence Minister, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula is said to be the next National Assembly Speaker.
Her deployment was announced at a meeting of the African National Congress (ANC)’s top leaders on Tuesday morning.
The former minister will replace Thandise Modise who was promoted by President Cyril Ramaphosa during the cabinet reshuffle to occupy the defence force office. This is after Mapisa-Nqakula contradicted Ramaphosa’s characterisation of the recent criminal rampage.
ANC’s Nomfanelo Kota said that the party would today, in a virtual caucus, discuss the process around the election of the new Speaker.
Parliament said that a date for the election would be determined through consultations
