The former University of Fort Hare lecturer, Professor Edwin Ijeoma was on Tuesday apprehended by the police in Qonce. The 55 year old is said to appear before the Zwelitsha Magistrate Court in Stutterheim on Thursday on charges of theft. He was arrested on the roadblock for driving a vehicle without the consent of the owner. The Nigerian fugitive made headlines after Hawks raided UFH offices after reports that Ijeoma was involved in money laundering, student admission fraud and corruption.
The University’s director Isaac Plaatjies, also laid criminal charges against Ijeoma for the irregular admission and registration of two students, including Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane, theft of money, theft of a university vehicle, and fraud in the region of R5 million for sketchy and unauthorised academic work and programmes for the Eastern Cape Legislature, various provincial departments and municipal authorities without the knowledge and consent of the University, and with a blatant disregard for University policies and rules.
