HIV infection rate on the rise in KZN’s teenagers

The eThekwini Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal says there has been an alarming rate of new HIV infections among girls and young women between 13 and 19-years old.

The municipality has launched a programme to help reduce the rate of HIV infections and sexually transmitted diseases.

It is also encouraging people to resume treatment for HIV and TB. Some people stopped their treatment when health services were disrupted by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As part of the campaign launch, Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda visited the Cato Manor Clinic and Children’s Home.

“Today we were launching our behaviour change programme which is part of the provincial government level by the office of the premier. Most of the numbers of infections especially amongst young people from 13 years to 19 years they are based around the area of Cato Manor, Cato Crest, and the surroundings, so we are indeed able to target that group, that sector of the youth so that we are able to preach to them that we need to encourage them, that they need to know their status on TB and HIV and AIDS.
