Manhunt for Cash-in-transit suspects in M1 shootout

A suspect has been shot dead and a police officer injured following a Cash-in-Transit robbery in Springs on Wednesday night.

National Police Spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe says armed suspects forced a cash van to come to a halt before the guards were disarmed. The vehicle was blown up and an undisclosed amount of cash was stolen.

“The suspects were traced three hours later on the M1 South, a shoot-out ensued with the suspects who were travelling in a Toyota Quantum. One was killed and two arrested while a police officer was injured.

“Three rifles were recovered, cash and two cellphones have been seized. Two empty cash bags, as well as implements used in armed robberies were found in this getaway vehicle. A manhunt is underway for the remaining suspects,” said police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe.
