Matatiele Local Municipality demolishes newly established shacks at
the Malubalula Area, Matatiele.
According to the Municipal Manager (MM), Lizo Matiwane, the land is earmarked for future developments. “The issue had been in court as the municipality tried to stop residents to build there…
“When we went to court, we discovered that there is a certain individual who leads the campaign to build in that land. The court issued an interim order to stop the community to build there, however, the person responsible for misleading people to build in that area opposed the interim,
” said MM.
Matiwane says they are in discussions with the local traditional leaders to look at the possible ways to implement the Spatial Planning and land Use Management Act 16 of 2013 which stipulates that the planning in town should be the same as in rural areas in land use, “We have to take into consideration that there are local chiefs in rural areas and the way they administer the land is different from the way the municipality does its work. So we are trying to mitigate and meet each other halfway,” said MM
Matiwane said community members have up to ten months to submit their inputs into the law.
