Mob justice results in a loss of life in Matatiele
Brutal community mob justice has resulted in a loss of life on Wednesday night in Sekhutlong, Matatiele. According to the headman of the area Setenana Moeketsi, two young men knocked at his home in the middle of the night, informing him that they have caught a thief ” I went out to investigate their allegation, upon arrival, I saw this young man’s body covered in blood…
“The information I was given was that the 29 year-old was caught attempting to break into someone else’s home who had just slaughtered a pig the same day. The house burglary victim screamed and called for help from neighbours. Scores of young men from this community went in numbers and brutally beat him…
Moeketsi further said, upon arrival at the scene, the young man was at his last stages of life because he was heavily bleeding “They wanted me to keep him in my house and I refused because he was already bleeding from head wounds.
“
The deceased was known in the community as a dangerous young man, he was a specialist in using a knife as a weapon when committing crimes. Bongani Msuthu, an uncle to the deceased said the family was not shocked when the news was brought to their attention” He was a trouble maker, it is known in the public, we are not surprised by what had happened to him.”
This is the second body in a space of less than a week in Sekhutlong after an elderly woman’s body parts were found scattered.
Moeketsi said the community was shocked by last week’s killing of a woman, Malerato whose body parts were found being eaten by a dog. He says the victim could have been involved and now the community feared for their safety.
